No custom ROM yet, just Android 2.2 FRG01B with root access. At least I can now actually back up my data, not just the apps.
Verizon is supposedly pushing out FRG22, but nobody I know has seen it yet. Now I don't care if they ever do. Life is good.

What is rooting a phone? Can you provide some details? I have a Motorola Droid, but haven't done much with it.

Android-based mobile phones run a Linux-like OS that only grants the user very limited permissions. Rooting is exploiting vulnerabilities in the OS to gain "root" (administrative) access. While that lets users customize their phones, it also lets them turn them into expensive paperweights if they make mistakes.
This forum is a good place to learn about rooting.
The best thing about a rooted phone is that you can finally back up everything. Without root, all you can back up is the apps, kind of, but no settings or user data. Think backing up Microsoft Word on your PC but not being able to back up any of your actual documents.
Root + BusyBox + Titanium Backup + Clockwork + Nandroid = peace of mind.
Plus it was really satisfying to dump Facebook and all those lame factory ringtones.
